Five ways China's economic crisis will affect Africa

Signs of an economic slowdown in China have led to fears of a global recession, including Africa, given the close ties it has built up with China in recent years.
BBC Africa Business Report's Lerato Mbele looks at five ways the continent could be affected:
Grey line

The rand

Rand notes and coins
South Africa's currency has taken the hardest battering because it is the only African currency traded on the so-called "carry-trade".
This is the money-market, where currency- and foreign-exchange brokers decide on the valuations of each nations currency. They look at the nature of the economy, its strength and its future prospects.
In this regard, South Africa is showing signs of weakness on the growth front, low productivity of the factory side and pull-backs on the mining side.
Together with volatile prices for its commodities such as gold, platinum and coal, traders have decided that the South African economy, and therefore its currency, will be risky to buy and invest in.
This is why the rand has lost nearly 8% of its value in the past week alone.
It is important to note that for other countries that buy and sell commodities, similar speculation would have occurred.

South Africa's stock market

The Johannesburg Securities Exchange
South Africa will feel a secondary impact on its stock market.
The Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) is the largest bourse in Africa and the 17th largest in the world.
That means the companies listed on the exchange are exposed to buyers and fund managers abroad.
About 40% of the daily trades on the JSE come from foreign traders, mainly in Europe and the US.
If these stockbrokers believe that the risks of buying shares in Africa outweigh the opportunities to profit from these stocks and bonds, they will withdraw their investments.
These trades happen at a click of the button, so in a day the JSE could lose millions of dollars.
In order to prevent this, the South African Reserve Bank has been asked to step in by imposing capital controls on how much money traders can withdraw from South Africa each day.
However, the bank refuses to take that action, saying it goes against the grain of a free market economy and will allow the markets to correct themselves naturally.
The only other option is to push up interest rates as this will reduce the debt on some of these stocks and reward those who invest their money over a longer period of time, with higher profits in the future.

Wayne Rooney ended his goal drought with a hat-trick as Manchester United beat Club Brugge to book their place in the Champions League group stages

Wayne Rooney ended his goal drought with a hat-trick as Manchester United beat Club Brugge to book their place in the Champions League group stages.
United led 3-1 from the first leg and Rooney added to that with a dinked shot for his first goal of the season.
The striker had a simple tap-in for his second goal after midfielder Ander Herrera's unselfish pass.
Rooney swept in a shot for his third and Herrera sidefooted in before Javier Hernandez missed a United penalty.
Hernandez also wasted a late chance as he skied a shot from four yards out.
United will now go into Thursday's group stage draw following a one-season absence.

Relief for Rooney

At last. The England captain opened his goalscoring account for the season at the fifth attempt and the relief was plain to see.
Rooney put his hands to his face before giving a prayer to the sky after his first club goal since an effort against Aston Villa in April.
He appeared to have been energised in terms of confidence after his opener, which came from Memphis Depay's through ball.
Herrera and Juan Mata set up Rooney's other goals as he finally benefitted from more midfield support in his role as the main striker.
"To be honest, if I didn't have a strong character that (the criticism) might have affected me," Rooney told BT Sport.
"I wasn't worried, if it was going on for three, four, five games more then maybe so but it's early days and I knew when the chances came I'd take them."

Van Gaal's midfield conundrum

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera
Ander Herrera scored eight goals for United last season
Herrera made his first start of the season as United manager Louis van Gaal rested Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, and the Spaniard pushed his claims for a regular starting berth.
The diminutive playmaker started alongside the more defensive Michael Carrick and, despite some early rustiness, his vision and creative instincts benefitted Rooney and United in attack.
Van Gaal's players have been accused of not helping Rooney by failing to run beyond him to help create space.
Herrera, though, was keen to push on, scoring a goal of his own as the Belgians capitulated.
Schweinsteiger and winger Ashley Young were introduced in the second half, adding to the competition for midfield places at United.

Man of the match - Wayne Rooney

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney
No-one was going to get the matchball off Wayne Rooney - not even the referee

Reaction

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal speaking to BT Sport:
"I think we were very organised. We played the ball a little bit more simple than before. You can create gaps and we scored so that is also good.
"Every goal shall give confidence to every player, even Wayne. I'm very happy for him.
"He has the best mentality that you can imagine. Such players with that level will always come back."
Captain Wayne Rooney:
"I wasn't worried. If the goals don't go in I still bring a lot to my team-mates."
Club Brugge coach Michel Preud'homme:
"This team (Manchester United) has everything - technical quality, physical quality in power and endurance, and of course they have the mentality."

Pundit analysis

BBC Radio 5 live's Danny Mills: "Job done by Manchester United and delight for Wayne Rooney, but I don't think you can tell from this whether United's season will be a success or not."

John Stones: Everton to reject Chelsea target's transfer request

verton manager Roberto Martinez says the club will turn down defender John Stones's transfer request.
The England international, 21, asked to leave on Tuesday after the Toffees refused offers of £20m, £26m and £30m from Premier League champions Chelsea.
However, the Blues will reportedly return with a £40m bid  before the transfer window closes on Monday.
"Sometimes money can't buy everything and that is going to be a very strong statement at Everton," said Martinez.
"This is not a moment when we can use any money to get us stronger."
Martinez started Stones in Everton's League Cup second-round tie at Barnsley on Wednesday, with the defender playing the whole of their 5-3 extra-time victory.
"John, for a young man under massive pressure, was terrific," added Martinez.
The Spaniard has been angered by Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho's public pursuit of Stones and says he trusts Everton chairman Bill Kenwright to stand firm and retain the centre-back.
"We have a chairman who will do the right thing for the club and for the team and, as a true Evertonian, we are clear he will not be easily influenced in taking the money and accepting things which will clearly make our team weaker," he said.
"The situation with John is very clear. We care about him, we will protect him and make sure we give him everything we can to allow him to enjoy his football."
Stones, who arrived from Barnsley for £3m in February 2013, has four years left on his contract after signing an extension in August 2014.

Stones was applauded by sections of the Everton support at Oakwell who saved their frustration for Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

China signs deal with Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote

A Chinese state-owned engineering company has signed a deal worth $4.3bn (£2.8bn) to build factories for a Nigerian cement company run by Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote.
China's Sinoma will build seven plants across the continent and one in Nepal.
The new factories will add around 25 million tonnes to the firm's existing cement capacity of 45 million tonnes.
Mr Dangote's company also produces food, fertiliser and is investing in oil refineries.Aliko Dangote
He is keeping a close eye on China's economic problems and the ensuing lower oil price.
"Of course we are affected," he said, "but we are not badly affected because we are not 100% in oil.
"We are a fully diversified company. So today if oil is doing [badly] it doesn't mean we are doing [badly] and that's the good thing about diversification."
Africa's economies have been hit hard by the fall in commodity prices but many are seeing a boom in infrastructure, for which cement is vital.
